  1. Red Dog AOTM, how do you feel about that?
Excited and really grateful to the sponsors and Red Dog team for helping me put in a couple of decent performances to earn this recognition.
  2. When did you join, and what attracted you to the club?
I joined around July 2023 after returning from 16 years in London – it’s nice to be training in the sunshine again. The major attraction for Red Dog was the breadth and depth of sessions available and performance culture focus. Also, being a relatively rubbish swimmer I really wanted the opportunity to make significant improvements – still a work in progress for those that have seen me swim!
  3. How much training do you do at the moment?
Too much, at least according to my family! Generally around 4 swims, 4-5 bikes (I’m a huge fan of the wind trainer), 3 runs, 1 Pilates session and some strength and conditioning. Oh and a lot of stretching, rolling and muscular recovery work to prepare for the next beating.
  4. What’s your favourite session and why?
You know I really like swimming, but just not good at it as noted above. I do like the Saturday long ride, but I would have to say the track session is my favourite. I just love to run fast (well at least fast for me these days!).
  5. Who’s your ideal training partner and why? Swim, Bike, Run
I once had a cycling coach who said to me ‘you don’t want a coach, you just want someone to flog you!’. I think that pretty much sums it up.
  6. Favourite motivational quote?
I really like Jess Fox’s (multiple Olympic canoe gold medallist) mantra, ‘to be number one, you need to train like you are number two’. However I have always gone with ‘no guts, no glory’.
  7. The one bit of advice I’d give to a newbie is?
Keep at it. I was chatting with Stuart Robinson from GB after my World Championship win over him in the sprint. He had won it the two prior years. He said it took him into his forties before he was any good at triathlon. I think the lesson is perseverance is key.
  8. What’s your next event?
Aside from a few qualifying races, my complete focus is now preparing for the Wollongong Triathlon World Championships in both the Sprint and Standard next year – making the rash assumption that I actually qualify!
  9. What do you do outside of training?
Aside from helping my two boys prepare for life outside of home, I love swimming in the surf and catching waves – the bigger the better.
  10. What’s your one guilty pleasure?
Several really – chocolate, ice cream and red wine – all of which I significantly curtailed in the lead up to the World Champs. Well that’s the price of glory…
